Our mission:
Tallinn Centre for Children at Risk is temporary home for children in need.
Tallinn Centre for Children at Risk is oldest centre in town, established in 1993. The centre consists of two separate shelters:
- Nõmme tee centre specializes on children with addiction problems. There are 32 places in the shelter for children at age of 10-17.
- Lilleküla centre specializes on children without parental care. There are 16 places in the shelter for children at age of 3-17.
Our purpose in Nõmme Tee Centre
Our purpose in Nõmme Tee Centre is to offer a shelter for children with addiction problems, to sort out their addiction and other problems and to support child throughout the alienation process. Our aim is to offer children safe growing environment. After intensive rehabilitation the child goes back to its origin growth environment (family, foster-family, children s home).
Mission statement in Nõmme Tee Centre
The child is directed to Centre by child welfare worker or adolescent committee. We cooperate with parents, if possible. Medical, psychological and educational rehabilitation will be done. If necessary the aftercare for child will be organised.
Work with children who have addiction problems is successful only in long perspective and therefore children will be held in Nõmme tee Centre up to 6 months. It s important to offer those children as good treatment as possible after getting rid of addiction problems, to develop their social skills and take care of their welfare after leaving the Centre.
Children get their education also in Nõmme tee Centre since January 2001. Carpentry, which was opened in August 2001, gives a great chance for children to acquire different practical skills for life.
Our purpose in Lilleküla Centre
Our purpose in Lilleküla Centre is to offer a shelter and help for children whose domestic situation is problematic. We offer children safe growth environment and help them to find solutions to their problems.
Mission statement in Lilleküla Centre
The child is directed to Centre by child welfare worker, police or people who see child in need on the street. Sometimes child itself comes to the Centre. While being in the Centre we try to find out what is the reason that the child is here, who are the parents and how can we help him or her in cooperation with municipality child welfare worker. We offer here medical, psychological and educational rehabilitation and child also continues its education in the Centre, and if necessary we find the child new school. Cooperation with parents is of high importance concerning child s future. Child stays in the Centre from 1 night to 2 months, if necessary even longer. The most hart-warming thing is that majority of the children go back to their homes. If domestic situation is not stable we prepare child for foster family or children s home, sometimes for special school.
Future plans for the Centre
In 2003, Tallinn Centre for Children at Risk starts drug-addiction anticipation work and starts to offer different educational programs for specialists who work with children at risk. We also intend to carry on researches and seminars in cooperation with sociology department of Tallinn Pedagogical University.
