UNICEF is the only UN organization, which is dedicated to the welfare of
children. UNICEF was founded in 1946 for the provision of emergency aid to children
who had suffered during World War II.

Unfortunately, UNICEF still has to provide effective emergency aid due to
natural and national catastrophes in today's world as well. The attention of
the Fund is mainly directed towards the primary needs of millions of
children suffering deprivation in Africa, Asia, Latin-America and also
Eastern Europe. In recognition of this work, UNICEF was awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize in 1965.

UNICEF, with the aid of the mass media, has brought to the attention of the
global public the fact that clean water, breast-feeding of infants,
vaccination and health care would help to avoid half of the child mortality
in the world, and therefore, save the lives of about 20 000 children every
day.

The main concern of UNICEF are the millions of children in developing countries whose primary needs for food, medical care and education are not met. National committees of UNICEF make their contribution that this world organization would reach every child in every corner of the world. In the same way in Estonia.

UNICEF is an organization that initiates programs directed to children in collaboration with national governments. UNICEF helps in planning services that are meant for children, raises funds and means, and trains human resources.
