Partners of different institutions from 11 European countries worked on the booklet "Dialogue about Dialogue", a collection of information and views, a handbook for Teachers as recourse material for use in classroom, and a DVD with interactive material for teacher-trainers to be flexibly used during the Dialogue Course.
The materials developed in this project will be the basis of this course, which aims to encourage teachers' professional growth by developing their dialogical sensitivity and skills through philosophical inquiry. As a consequence of this widening of teachers' perspectives and skills, the course is effectively aiming also to convert classrooms into communities of inquiry where dialogue is searched and where children will learn not only basic skills such as listening and responding, but also dispositions for lifelong learning and participation, such as curiosity, reasonableness and openness to others' perceptions and cultures.
Undertaking a training activity provides an excellent opportunity to refresh language skills, improves practical teaching, helps form lasting school links and friendships with other teachers and institutions and provides a greater understanding of school and further education across Europe.
Especially this course concentrates on the basic process of encouraging inquiry and dialogue in the classroom, but without the implication that these skills have to be practised only in "philosophy" lessons. It focuses on developing essential dialogical skills or virtues, such as active listening, critical questioning, concept creating, empathetic responding, reasonable negotiating, etc. ? all skills that would have a positive effect on the social and personal development of all young people and on their lifelong learning and acting as citizens.
